Big Sofa Experience
Re-discovering the art of consumer conversation
The Big Sofa Experience is a video-led approach to consumer conversations. It involves us plonking a sofa in a high street or shopping centre (or wherever), and inviting people to sit down, have a cup of tea, and talk to us.
The strange thing is that people really are happy to open up and talk about themselves – often in a frank and revealing way. Vox pops and focus groups are great for giving you answers or reactions to specific questions; but The Big Sofa Experience brings people’s lives into your organisation, showing you what people are like, what’s on their minds, and how macro issues are playing out in their lives.

How you can use Big Sofa Experience
The Big Sofa Experience enables us to see real people talking naturally about the things that really matter to them.
It’s a powerful customer closeness tool, that actively shows people in the business what your customers are saying about their lives – as well as about you and your competitors.
It’s an ongoing planning resource that connects with other information around knowledge, trends and social change, creating a consumer library for organisation-wide use.

How The Big Sofa Works
We go to a high street, shopping centre, railway station, pub, post office, store, car dealer etc
We set up stall and ask people to come and have a cup of tea and a chat
We show them a few cards, each with a broad theme written on e.g. ‘viewer’, ‘home improver’, ‘gardener’, ‘customer’ ‘shopper’, ‘car driver’, ‘charity supporter’, ‘borrower, ‘believer’ – anything that creates the space for a conversation led by them but relevant to your business
We ask them to pick cards they identify with and talk to us what they mean to them
They really open up, and lead us to different places in natural, two way conversation about them, how they’re thinking, how they’re living, how macro concepts relate to individual lives
We film the chat, and produce edited clips that can be sorted into a system accessible online.
We can then add other features such as voting buttons or comment boxes for web visitors to give us feedback on the conversation and how much they identify with its substance.
